April 7th '07 - COMP - Us King of the Rail - Auckland!!!!
7th April 2007
With Orewa near flooded on Thursday who would have thought that we would have such a perfect day on Saturday with sunshine and EVEN Surf rolling in just 50m from the bottom of the snow rail!
The day started of with 9 Truckloads of snow being collected from snowplanet by the amazing crew at Coast Diggers. The building crew of Mike, Duncan and the Jases were on hand nice and early to assemble the rail, while Micah was up the scaffolding like a monkey to tighten the bolts.
This year Underground Skate went all out bringing in the Remain Industries super perfect Skate Mini Ramp and building a stage with the help of Neville brothers trucking. Two kick ass bands rocked the stage. First up was 20-sumthin-K. Lead by long time Us Rep Ihaia Harris. They're a tight unit and definitely a band to look out for in the future. The Second band was Quarter 2 (Check out their myspace) who have also had a long association with Us and are blazing the Auckland music scene at present.
Now down to the action....were do we start!? What a line up of rippers we had this year. In the U15's it was so tight all the way through with a couple of big crashes separating the pack. Board slide to Fakie was the stock standard trick as the groms played the safety card to advance to the finals where a sudden death final saw Scotty 90% pull off a 270 Front Board while Richard popped the gap to front board.
Macy Gill repping it hard for the females
The Girls division attracted entrants from as far away as Mt Maunganui and the girls REALLY Stepped it up! I heard so many guys saying "Shit they're way better than me!"...haha, it was really good to see. Macy Gill came out blazing with some super clean board slides while Lucy, Ocean and Stacy all pulled some solid tricks from their bags. It came down to a sudden death final with Macy just edging out Rebecca with a Front Board over Rebecca Torr's attempted Front 270, so close!
Lil Leroy Christensen on his comeback after knee surgery
In the Mens division things really stepped up. With a bunch of sponsored riders and Snow planet rulers on hand the crowd were treated to some amazing riding. Leroy Christensen smooth as silk and super tech even with a bung knee, Dylan Sutton fast, clean and big F/S 270's, James Hamilton damn what can you say! Huge F/S 450 lip to win at the end. So dope! Its shows why he's travelling the world snowboarding competing against the likes of Shaun White and Danny Davis! James walked away with an amazing trip which included 4 Night's Skiwi Camper hire from Queenstown, 2 Nights accommodation at Snowpark and Lift passes to match while Dylan took hold a brand new 2007 Burton Custom snowboard...pretty damn good for 2nd!
