Jan 22nd '09 - Kiwi Snowboarder Ellie Richards Scoops Gold in the Northern American Cup
22nd January 2009
Copper Mountain, Colorado, USA - Snowboardcross athlete Ellie Richards, 21, New Plymouth, has taken gold, defeating a strong field of women at the North American (NorAm) Cup at Copper Mountain Colorado, yesterday.

Richards, who is currently training with the Canadian Snowboardcross (SBX) Development Team led by coaches Adam Robertson of Canada, and Rachel Newton of Wanaka, made this her first NorAm victory.
This is a personal best for me, said Richards. Im really stoked and this win has definitely helped boost my confidence. Im looking forward to the next few events and continuing with my success.
Assistant Coach, Newton, said that Richards starts were unmatched.
She was out in front from the drop of the gate, gaining a healthy lead by the first major feature, said Newton. This is a big step forward for Ellie and also for the sport of Snowboardcross in New Zealand.
In the Mens field, with a total 75 competitors including the US and Canadian Teams, Will Harris, 19, Wanaka, and Phil Dominick, 21, Dunedin, both finished in the top half of the field. Harris is a member of the New Zealand Snowboard Union Development Squad.
