Jun 7th '09 - Locals out in force for Coronet Peak opening
7th June 2009
It was a true locals celebration for todays opening of Coronet Peak with Queenstowners flocking to their favourite mountain for exceptional opening day snow conditions.

Mark Denton, Ben Rotto, Dan Jenkins and Tim Lawrence, all of Queenstown
are the first to ride the Coronet Express Quad for the 2009 winter
season at Coronet Peak.
Favourable cold weather, consistent snowfalls and plenty of snowmaking opportunities resulted in superb snow conditions for the opening, the best in many years according to Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie.
Its a long time since we had this sort of cover on opening day. It was an absolutely awesome day. We had good numbers of people, great snow and great feedback about the conditions, the service and the experience. It was a very social day with people catching up with friends and having a ball. We were delighted to be able to open the Greengates Express Six Seater as well as the Coronet Express Quad, the Meadows Double and surface lifts in the learners area. It was just great to see long time locals back on the hill, many of whom weve welcomed on opening day for 25 years or more.
The Lindauer team poured bubbles for the first comers and there was a plenty of competition for first-on-the-chair honours this year won by a group of locals who camped overnight, beating a tardy second group which turned up about 4.30am.
Mr McCrostie says Coronet Peak is well set up for the 09 winter season with an upper mountain average snow base of 80cm, lower mountain average of 50cm and a good snow year forecast.
The mountain is covered, our crew are all on board and were absolutely ready to enjoy the season. Were looking forward to another great day tomorrow.
New this year at Coronet Peak are expansions to snowmaking capacity with the addition of a new water reservoir and new pumps, two new snow groomers for the modern groomer fleet and an upgraded childrens area with a new Sun Kid conveyor lift.
People heading to Coronet Peak this season can enjoy affordable transport to/from the mountain. Return transport from the Queenstown Snow Centre and selected Queenstown accommodation providers to the base building will be available for only $10 per person per day.
