Minus Five Degrees in a Bikini

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Begins at Turoa

Around 30 very brave skiers and snowboarders shunned sub zero temperatures to take part in this years Rip Curl/K2 Bikini Downhill at Turoa this afternoon. The event is all about raising funds for Breast Cancer Research and kicks off Octobers Awareness Month.

Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager, Mike Smith said todays competitors in the Rip Curl/K2 Bikini Downhill had to be extremely committed. We had a cold front though last night with some fresh snow. Despite it being nice and sunny, conditions were much more like the middle of winter with a minus 5 degree temperature and the wind chill making it more like minus 15.

There were plenty of volunteers (mostly guys) on hand to collect donations and carry jackets to the bottom of the course.

We never have any shortage of helpers for this event. It was also good to see a few guys get their tops off and race for a fantastic cause, Mike Smith said.

Both Turoa and Whakapapa have record breaking snow bases and the best ever snow conditions leading into the September/October school holidays. Whakapapa remains open until October 27th and Turoa until November 16th.
