Coronet Peak to reopen as winter conditions return

29th September 2008

Thanks to cold temperatures and 30+ centimeters of new snow on Saturday, skiers and riders will be welcomed back to Coronet Peak tomorrow Tuesday 30th September.

The ski area had closed for the season on Saturday, September 20 but a return to winter conditions and plenty of school holiday demand has led to a decision to reopen.

Weve had a big dump of snow and theres more in the forecast, says Hamish McCrostie, Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager.  People are just itching to get up there so were working to reopen just as soon as we can.

Mr McCrostie says it will be a limited opening with Coronet Express Quad chair, Meadows Double Chair and the Magic Carpet lift providing access to the slopes.

At this stage its not possible for us to return to full facilities.  But were looking forward to welcoming people to ski and ride the main core of the mountain.  The majority of trails and off piste terrain will be available providing excellent skiing and riding for all levels.

NZSki Ltd CEO James Coddington said he was enthusiastic about reopening and working towards the originally planned season-end date.

We closed when we didnt have a product and now that we do have one, we are going to reopen.  Its looking wonderful up there and were all keen to try and reach our original closing date of October 5. The feedback from our customers is theyd like to be at Coronet Peak if possible and we will ensure the limited lift opening is reflected in reduced pass prices.

Mr Coddington was hoping to finish with the party that was planned for September 21.

All going well well be able to close the season with our inaugural International Day.  We really wanted to finish with a party that recognized the international contingent that has served Coronet so well this year.

The ski area will open to skiers and riders between 9am and 4pm from tomorrow, Tuesday 30th September.  Full day lift passes will be available at reduced rates of $69 per adult, $53 for students and $37 for youth/senior.  Base facilities on offer will include food and beverage, Snow Sports School, rental, crche facilities and retail (with a stock clearance sale offering 40% off everything).
