Finland’s Korpi Wins Snowboard World Cup Big Air in Stockholm

25th November 2008

Stockholm, Sweden - Finlands Janne Korpi topped the field in Saturdays second Big Air of the 2009 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup seaon in Stockholm.

After barely making it into the final round of 12 riders, 22 year-old winner of the last Halfpipe World Cup in Saas-Fee, Switzerland got back to business and scored 53.4 points to win his fifth World Cup contest in Stockholms 1912 Olympic Stadion, relegating Chris Soerman (SWE, 52.1) and Seppe Smits (BEL, 51.2) to the second and third ranks, respectively.

Korpis victory was even more impressive after missing Fridays training. While doing some rails, I broke my bindings and wasnt able to practice at all. I was pretty disappointed about this, Korpi acknowledged.

Training or not, in competition on Saturday Korpi landed a Frontside 1080 and another stylish Cab 900 in front of 20,000 spectators to defeat the international competition that included Korpis teammates Antti Autti, Risto Mattila and Peetu Piiroinen.

Im so stoked! I always try to give it my best shot and always try to achieve my goal of winning but its not that easy if the line-up is as strong as today, Korpi said.

With his second place finish, Chris Soerman secured the first ever Swedish podium spot in the Swedish capital with a Backside 900 and Frontside 1080.

Im so happy. Im happy about my result, about the fact that we have such an event here in Stockholm at such a historic venue and so many people watching it, Soerman said. I felt comfortable the whole day and simply did my thing. However, I was only nervous before my second qualifying run as I had not landed the first one.
