Fire, snow and slippery rails at Coronet Peak Mardi Gras

16th September 2006

Around 1000 people reveled in the mild, springtime conditions and party atmosphere at Coronet Peak last night during the Mountain Mardi Gras.

Night skiing was in full swing and an ?S Rail? set up in front of the deck area providing fun for riders and spectator action for everyone else.

Scott Luciensa of the USA now has even more reason to return to Queenstown next season since he picked up the ?07 season pass for being the first person to ride the ?S Rail? right to the end.

Early in the celebrations, children enjoyed face painting and reverse bungy while stilt walkers dressed in Brazilian Mardi Gras costumes entertained the crowds.

After dark, the fire dancers performed and later, local band Mutz Nutz rocked the hill.

Event Coordinator Alli Edwards said the turnout, entertainment and atmosphere was superb.

?People loved it, there were food stalls with Indian food and sushi on offer, and lots of fun.  It was about celebrating a fantastic winter and enjoying the night on the mountain ? I think we achieved that.?
