The Remarkables helps local children with disabilities thrive on slopes
9th July 2009
Children with disabilities who live in the Wakatipu region and would love to ski or snowboard can apply for funding to help them achieve their potential on the slopes.
The funding is available through The Remarkables Adaptive Snowsports Programme, designed to help people with disabilities enjoy snowsports by providing access to specialist adaptive equipment, trained adaptive instructors and volunteer snow buddies.
Ross James, Adaptive Program Coordinator, said the funds would help children by providing specialized instruction in a safe and supportive environment.
One of the main barriers for children participating in snowsports can be the initial cost of the one-on-one lessons required at the start, he said. Its our hope to remove that barrier and give the children the opportunity to decide if snowsports is for them.
Mr James said the programme had proved popular this season catering for people with a range of disabilities from New Zealand and overseas.
It is an exciting year for the programme with a great team of qualified adaptive instructors, experienced volunteers and more new equipment, he said.
Theres also the opportunity for people with disabilities to be inspired by the athletes taking part in the disabled ski racing at the Winter Games in August.
Anyone interested in adaptive lessons, free volunteer support or in adaptive equipment rental can email adaptive@theremarkables.co.nz or phone 03 4426714.
