Snowboard retailer scoops prestigious business awards

23rd September 2009

Boardertown, East Aucklands premier snowboard store received two awards at the Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards on 18 September.

After an intense judging process involving more than 120 Manukau-based businesses, Boardertown walked away with the Excellence in Emerging Business and overall Small Business of the Year awards.

Winning these awards has given us confidence, says Tim Guy, Director. Its an acknowledgement that weve created something good: not just employment for ourselves, but a business which impacts positively on our customers, our staff, our suppliers, and the community around us.

Boardertown has a strong focus on the community with them currently managing and coaching the Howick and Macleans College at the North Island Secondary Schools Competition.

Being involved at the grass-roots level of snowboarding is hugely important to us, says Daniel McClean, fellow Director of Boardertown.  It means snowboarding as a sport will continue to grow and mature, and gives younger kids the stoke that we have for snowboarding.

Boardertown has come from being a small local store and has faced a series of difficulties since starting up. These adversities included a series of four break-ins to its Howick store, including a ram-raid, which nearly forced Boardertown to close its doors. Yet the team were determined to make the business a success, and relocated Boardertown to Botany Town Centre in April 2007. This was a wise move which saw the business grow by 1000% since the opening, and the team have since developed an online store too.

Boardertown is as much about being involved in the snowboard community as it is about being in business, says co-Director Matthew Traynor.  We love snowboarding so why not make it our business.
