Mt Hutt blanketed in snow

3rd June 2007

25 centimetres of fresh snow fell at Mt Hutt overnight (Saturday) and snowmaking machines are now fired up, producing snow at full capacity in the lead up to the opening of the Canterbury ski area.

The sudden southerly change to winter conditions has been welcomed by Ski Area Manager Dave Wilson as well as snow sport lovers everywhere.

?Following an unseasonably warm May, it?s great to have the temperatures plummet.  Things can change very quickly at this time of year and we?re delighted to be able to start building our winter base.?

Mr Wilson is expecting temperatures to remain low for the foreseeable future allowing snowmakers to continue to generate snow.

?We?re in a cold snap now which is pushing us towards a starting position.?

Mt Hutt is scheduled to open next Saturday, June 9.
