Cardrona Wakes up to 40cm of Powder Snow on a Bluebird Sunday
12th August 2007
On a day that is likely to go down as possibly the best day all season, skiers and riders from all round Otago experienced knee deep dry powder snow on a sunny Sunday.
The north westerly front brought 36 hours of snowfall leaving the snow base on par if not better than previous years. All slopes are open including some spectacular powder skiing and riding in the Acadia and Tulip chutes and other advanced terrain.
?I was dropping off the cat tracks in the Captains Basin into knee deep dry powder all morning?, says Matt Snell, from Western Australia. ?Some of the best snowboarding I?ve ever had?.
?It was the best snowboarding I?ve had in three seasons?, says Donna Butterfield from Wellington but living in Wanaka for the season. ?I was out there early and had fresh tracks most of the morning?.

Cardrona has also opened the Johnny Superpipe, where New Zealand?s first ever Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup and Coke Zero Cardrona Games will be held in early September. One of the few official (or ?homologated?) half pipes in the Southern Hemisphere it?s 150m long, 17m wide, has a 5.6m elliptical transition, and is 17.8 degrees in pitch. In other words it?s a large Olympic-standard half pipe.
A southerly front arrived at 2.40pm that is expected to last 12-24 hours. It tops off a snow laden 72 hour weather cycle.
