Mt Ruapehu Igloo Open for Business

13th September 2007

Mt Ruapehu?s Igloo megaplex is now officially open for business after Department of Conservation approval and a fully catered dress rehearsal over the weekend. The igloo megaplex sits at 2290m on the Whakapapa side of Mt Ruapehu. It features three bedrooms, 2 dining rooms and plenty of storage.

Mt Ruapehu?s Marketing Manager, Mike Smith, says it?s so exciting to have the Igloo open for business. ?This will be one of the most unique experiences you could ever have. Watching the sun set over the western horizon from the igloo megaplex is amazing.?

The igloo took about two weeks to build and is expected to last well into October.

It can sleep three couples or nine singles plus the Mt Ruapehu guides. Guests will enjoy a fully catered meal and some great company. To ensure warmth and comfort, -18 degrees Marmot sleeping bags are used.

?Apart from such an awesome experience one of the extra benefits is a first tracks ski or snowboard to the base area on freshly groomed snow. The only other people on the snow are those staff setting up for the day,? Mike Smith said.

Prices are $499 per night for a couple and $299 for a single. Groups can also book the whole igloo.

Information and bookings can be made at Whakapapa Ski Area on 07 892 3738. You can also check out the whole experience on www.MtRuapehu.com.
