Mt Hutt Ski Area poised for a great season

13th June 2008

Mt Hutt Ski Area is to open tomorrow, Saturday June 14. The ski area has enjoyed early snow and excellent snowmaking conditions providing a good snow base for skiers and boarders on opening day.

Dave Wilson, Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager said the ski area has had a great run up to the start of the season.

Early snowfalls and ideal temperatures for snowmaking means we now have a 50cm snow base which is very good cover for this early in the season, he said.

To celebrate the season opening, the first on the chair will be awarded the infamous first-on-the-quad and first-on-the-summit chair t-shirts while other early birds will be welcomed with a glass of bubbles courtesy of Lindauer.

Lifts operating on opening day will be the Summit Six, Quad Chair and the Magic Carpet offering access to all levels of terrain.

If the weather conditions hold we should be able to open from the Summit on day one this year which is exciting as we havent been able to achieve this in over a decade, said Mr Wilson.

Twenty three new guns were added this year to Mt Hutts fleet of guns, making snowmaking more efficient and effective.

Expanding our snowmaking arsenal means skiers and riders will enjoy more consistent main trail coverage for longer. The new snow guns work quickly and efficiently, improving start up time so that when conditions are right, were straight onto it, said Mr Wilson.

New features at Mt Hutt this year include a new five terraced mini terrain park to ease progression from novice through to intermediate level, a refurbished function room offering private groups of up to 100 people a relaxed and informal atmosphere overlooking the slopes, and an exciting array of new features in the new High Country style for both the Big Park and the Mini Park.

This excellent start to the season has locals very excited at the prospect of a great winter, he said.

Base facilities opening on Saturday include Sky High Caf, Skiwiland (day care), Rental and Repair, Snow Shop and Snow Sports School.
