Coronet Peak is closed until at least next Monday, June 23, because of unseasonably warm weather.

Parent company NZSki CEO James Coddington said that as soon as cool temperatures kicked in, the mountains brand new $12million snowmaking system could get the main trails covered within 48 hours of optimum snowmaking conditions (-1 degree and below).

Our reservoirs are full and 200+ snow guns are ready to fire as soon as the cold weather arrives, he said.

Staff were informed this morning of the decision to stand down all but core operations until the weather is cold enough to make snow or natural snow arrives.

We have discussed our position with all staff who understand they will now be stood down until further notice.

To keep morale high and maintain a strong culture the company has put in place a range of initiatives ranging from daily BBQ lunches and a host of activities to choose from.  

Were committed to the well being of our staff and have put together a daily activities schedule.  Theres a day trip to Milford Sound including a Red Boat cruise, a luge day, soccer and touch rugby tournaments and other activities. Basically we want to support everyone to the best of our ability and ensure they have plenty to do while we all wait for the weather to turn, he said.

Home to the latest technologies and a highly skilled snowmaking crew, Coronet Peak has everything in place to maximize the cold conditions when provided by Mother Nature.

 Over the past seven months we have installed the worlds most sophisticated snowmaking system.  Now its simply a matter of waiting until the conditions are right to use it.
