Coronet Peaks brand new base building, dubbed JSDs Lodge by NZSki board and staff, was officially opened at a special luncheon ceremony at the mountain resort yesterday.
Declaring the building officially open, NZSki Ltd Chairman John Davies thanked all those involved in the effort and said the building was a result of the boards simple philosophy to get the product right. Mr Davies particularly commended architect Michael Wyatt for meeting all requirements of the brief.
He understood our objectives a sense of arrival, an easy flow and beauty.
Two plaques were unveiled at the event; the first declared the building formally open while the second, presented by NZSki board member Graham Smolenski detailed the informal name of the building and acknowledged Mr Davies determination.
John drove this project, said Mr Smolenski. Its here because of his tenacity and visionby the managers and directors, this building is known as JSDs Lodge.
Detailing the history of Coronet Peak and its subsequent relationship to the growth of Queenstown from a one season (summer) resort to two season and eventually four season resort, NZSki CEO James Coddington described the 7 month and 7 day building effort as a Herculean community collaboration.
Mr Coddington acknowledged the group of shareholders, local families, who instigated the 2002 buyout of New Zealands three premier ski areas Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt.
These people have invested upwards of $70m. They have transformed Mt Hutt, now Coronet Peak and soon The Remarkables will have its day.
The $30 million Coronet Peak project included the installation of a world leading snowmaking system which Mr Coddington said would future proof the business.
We have made a massive commitment to Queenstown. We also understand our responsibility to the community. We are as close as we can get to future proofing not only NZSkis business, but Queenstowns business and New Zealands business as a winter destination.
