Xtreme action at Mt Ruapehu - skiers and boarders to compete for top honours
4th September 2008
Export Gold Xtreme & Relentless Snowboard Challenge:
The Pinnacles, Whakapapa from 9 September
Mt Ruapehu is set to play host to the Export Gold Xtreme Competition which includes the Relentless Snowboard Challenge one of few big mountain snowboarding competitions in the world.
New Zealands top big mountain skiers, including Geoff Small, Scott Staples, Helen Griffin and Janina Kuzma have already registered for the competition which runs over three days between the 9th and 14th of September (additional contingency days incorporated in case of poor weather). The Relentless Snowboard Challenge is being held on the second of the three days.
Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager, Mike Smith says conditions on the Mountain are ideal in the lead up to the competition.
The unique terrain of Mt Ruapehu provides an amazing opportunity to see awe-inspiring skills on display on the extreme terrain of the Pinnacles from the comfort of the caf deck.
The Pinnacles are looking spectacular and the massive snowfall we experienced a couple of weeks ago has allowed us to hold day one of the competition on the cliff above Happy Valley, making it an even more impressive spectator event viewable from the base area and Happy Valley cafes. We are in for a real treat!
New for this year is a contingency venue of The Fingers at Turoa so we are looking forward to a complete and challenging competition whatever the weather conditions.
Registration costs $85 for the Export Gold Xtreme Skiing Competition and $50 for the Relentless Snowboard Challenge. Event schedules, entry forms and details of the prize pool and judging, can be found on Mt Ruapehus website, www.mtruapehu.com/winter/events
September is a huge month of events at Mt Ruapehu, with the final Moro Freestyle Series event for the season - the K2 Skis and Snowboards Big Air being held on Saturday 6 September. This is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, with an impressive 50 foot jump right next to the Giant Caf at Turoa.
